In your closing clearly state what happens next (e.g. that you will call the employer to arrange an interview, to determine the status of your application, look forward to hearing from them, etc.). Make a specific request for an interview in this section.
Thank them for taking the time to review your application as well as notify them of what you have included along with the letter. Most people end with something like, "Thank you for your consideration", so use something different. Here are two examples: "I'm excited about talking further" or "I know I could do a good job for you."
Include contact information just in case the résumé and cover letter become separated.
Conclude with an appropriate closing, then leave enough space for you to sign the letter, and type your full name at the bottom. Most people close with "Sincerely" so you should try something different. For example, you could try using, "With great enthusiasm," "Good wishes," or "With best regards".
Here are some
sample phrases you can use:
Enclosed is my resume for.. .
Customize the cover letter to the position that you are applying for.
Send them to the people who can hire you, such as department heads or hiring managers. If the name of the person is not given in the job advertisement or posting, or if you are not responding to an ad, then call the company to find out the name and title of the person to whom you should address your letter.
In your letter be sure that you are not coming off as either arrogant or unsure of yourself. You want to appear confident and purposeful as well as open and honest.
When you are applying for a specific position use the exact title in your introduction, since recruiters are often hiring for many positions concurrently.
Request an interview in your letter, and tell them when you will call them. Most importantly, follow through!
